Southern Israel 1998

General information
The holiday was booked with Longwood Holidays at a cost of £447.00 per person, based on three people sharing a hotel room. This price included flights between Manchester and Ovda with Britannia Airlines, transfers between Ovda Airport and the hotel, 14 Nights bed and breakfast accommodation at the Edomit Hotel and free holiday Insurance. The hotel was of a very high standard and was very comfortable with excellent service, though being in the centre of Eilat was a little noisy at night, as most shops and pubs etc stay open till 4am. I slept with ear- plugs and found these very effective. Note that the Edomit Hotel is no longer in the position shown on the map in the Gostours guide and is now by the main roundabout in Eilat. Food, and drink
Breakfasts at the hotel consisted of cereals and a wide selection of salads, fish, baguettes etc. Packed breakfasts could be ordered from the hotel reception anytime before 9pm the previous evening. In the evenings we ate mainly at the Underground Pub, which we found quite cheap e.g. a meal of chips sausage and beans cost 10 shekels (approx £1.82) and a pint of Carlsberg cost 7 shekels (approx £1.28). We spoke to other birders who were paying up to 22 shekels a pint. The water was safe to drink; I drank it with no ill-effects, but bottled water is readily available if preferred.
Telephones
All telephones used cards which were available from certain shops. To call the UK dial 01344 then leave off the initial 0 from the UK area code. Car hire and taxis We hired a Fiat Punto with air-conditioning for one week at a cost of approx £190. but note that $400 or a credit card is required as a deposit to ensure that the vehicle is returned undamaged. Main roads were generally quite good but many birding locations are along rough tracks. We visited the pools near the North Reservoirs after some rain and found that the area had turned into a mud slide and in these conditions could be quite dangerous. For the rest of the holiday we walked or used taxis. These were quite cheap and very numerous, almost half of the cars in Eilat appear to be taxis, as you walk around a single pip on the horn usually means a taxi is looking for business. On several occasions we pre-arranged for taxi’s to pick us up at set times in the mountains and they always arrived promptly on time.
Weather
Generally very hot a good sun screen and hat are recommended, though we had some rain and a sandstorm on 28th March.
THE HADORAM EXPERIENCE
On 1st April we went on the guided tour with Hadoram Shirihai to the Negev around Nizzana etc. This was excellent and well worth the £40.00 cost. We were shown displaying Houbara Bustards, Cream-coloured Courser, Sandgrouse, Eagle Owl and Bonelli's Eagle at the nest etc, and in the evening we were taken to a breeding site of Hume’s Tawny Owl. Hadoram is the only person with a license to visit the nest site of Hume’s Tawny Owl, so it is essential to go with him if you wish to see this species. It is possible to visit the Negev area by yourself and join Hadoram in the evening to visit the Hume’s Tawny Owl at a cost of £15.00. To visit the Negev etc with Hadoram without going to the Hume’s Tawny 0wl cost £25.00. All prices relate to 1998.

These were greyer on the mantle contrasting more with the rufous tail, like Thrush Nightingale and also had greyish underparts, sometimes forming a breast band like Thrush Nightingale.
