There are essentially around five variations of the R20 to comply with regional
market variations and to suit differing listening climates and enforcement
regimes.

Japanese Model
The Japan model has a facility for listening to railroad systems.
WX Alert
The USA version has a facility to monitor weather alerts. The NWS is broadcast
in the USA on the public service band by NOAA. A network of over 940
transmitters covers all 50 states and surrounding waters. Transmitter power can
be around 1kW. The frequencies used are as follows (MHz)

Blocked Bands
The USA model has the cellphone band blocked and in a fit of over-zealousness,
Icom blocked more than they needed to.
While the frequency range is blocked by the ECPA in the US, Icom blocks legal
frequencies in the US version of the R20 (822-823.9875 MHz, and 867-868.9875 MHz
)
849-850.9875 MHz is also Blocked in US version. This is legal spectrum in US.
Icom still has not figured out how to block the illegal stuff, and leave the
legal stuff.
The ECPA is outdated. Most cellular is TDMA / CDMA / GSM. There is very little
AMPS left.
The French model also has some
bands blocked.
The European, Canadian and UK models have full coverage with no
gaps.
