Chinese Handheld Transceivers
I thought it was about time to take the plunge and get one of these puppies. For the money it's hard to resist.
Manufacturers go by names such as Jingtong, Kensung, Kington, KYD (New Century), Linton, Quansheng, Quanzhou, Weierwei, Wouxun etc.
Most are not type approved for PBR as they are in the first instance field programmable via the keypad. Some are CE marked so can be used within licence terms by M3 callsigns.
My considerations were the inclusion of both wide and narrow deviation (this is not the same as channel step incidentally) PC programming, Alpha tagging and a readily available supply of batteries.
I went for the WEIERWEI VEV-3288s UHF which met most of these criteria, but given the language barrier, it's often hard to eek out the details from the sellers in order to determine exactly what is on offer.
This turns out to be operationally very similar to the PuXing PX-328.
My next one to review is the PuXing PX-777 Plus. This in addition has a scrambler function and the ANI is supposed to work properly. It's also supposed to be possible to navigate the menus a little easier, i.e. you don't have to power up and power down in order to go into direct field programming mode.
