Dead Runners society race report
Sale 10 mile race, Manchester - sunday 6th August 1995
8 days after the Tour back to Manchester for
the Sale 10. I was starting to get
ready for my move to Cambridge. This post also mentions the Spectrum
Striders
mile race and the
Gothenberg world championships.
Afternoon deads and DRUnKs
Tony back sorting through the mail after a week's leave and
sorting things out
for Cambridge. I think I will be here
at Daresbury until September 22nd, I'll
be unsubscribing
on that date but I shall get hooked up at Cambridge asap. My
brother (computer programmer) is coming up from Kent next weekend and
he's
going to help me buy a PC (I have to pay) for
working and mail reading as a student.
A week last sunday I ran the Sale 10 miler, scene of my
incredible 61.16 pb
of 3 years ago when I was really
fit. I've not got near that time since then
and I was
still rather tired from the Tour but I thought I'd go and run
round
and see how the legs were.
It was another HHH day, arrived in enough time to enter, met up
with
ex-daresbury dead Mike Hoyland. I did 2 laps of the
track to warm up, this was
enough. Set off very slowly,
one lap of the track before we headed out of the
park
and onto the roads. Very slow first mile (7.39) and then I speeded
up
and started working my way through at about 7 minute
pace. After 2 miles back
into the park and then out
again to start the big loop. Nice and flat and
suburban
with a lot of tree lined roads which helped as it was very warm
and
sunny. Caught and passed a clubmate just before
halfway, I was moving reasonably
well by now and
*racing* although my hamstring was troubling me. Halfway in
36.15, maintained pace, this was my 4th run in this race and I knew
what
was coming. Between 6 and 7 miles there is a long
straight road, I remember
this from 92 when Mike H
caught me but didn't get past and I managed to get
away
and go on to run 61.16. Still passing runners in from here, felt
very
tired. By 8 miles we were nearly back in the park,
8 miles in 57.44, back
through park and a very short bit
of road before heading back to the park
and finishing on
the track in 70.48. The last 2 miles took 13.03 but these
have always been "short" miles, I ran about 12.0x in 92 in from 8 miles.
Not
too bad a run although my hamstring was really sore
at the end, at one stage I
was worried about a pw
(73.xx) but I got sub 71 fairly comfortably at the end.
The race was won by Tour of Tameside champ Bashir Hussain in
48.14, not bad
in this weather. 1st lady was US born UK
international Suzanne Rigg in 57.53.
Mike complete with
wasp proof cool shades had a good run to finish 65th in
63.26 and I was 126th. 221 finished.
2 days later I did our clubs mile road race and had a real
shock to the system
finishing 7th/9 in my race (one of
the slow races) in 6.25 :-( I ran 13 miles
faster than
that at Helsby in January. My legs didn't want to know about
running fast, it shows you can do long races slowly off years of mileage
but no
way can you run fast if you don't do any
speedwork for 3 months :-(
I watched a lot of the world champs on BBC and eurosport over
the week. Not
a great championships with all the
disqualifications, false starts and the
stupid marathon
start times (not to mention the missing lap), the british team
didn't do that well although with the spread of talent around these days
only
the USA team did really well. I enjoyed the men's
marathon, a great race,
amazing to see two of our chaps
up there for so long although I knew when Ceron
decided
to go they wouldn't last very long. Good performances by Holmes, Radcliffe
and
McColgan but outside the marathon our male distance
runners weren't very
good, Coe, Ovett and Cram are now
in the commentary box, their era is long
gone.
better get back to the digestsxxxxxx work
bye
