Christmas 1986 and I was a bit disillusioned.
The band I thought could do no wrong - the mighty Iron Maiden - had released the very disappointing Somewhere In Time and promoted it with a lacklustre tour which I'd travelled through to Edinburgh to see (the Glasgow Apollo having closed the previous year).
With impeccable timing, Kerrang! invited submissions for a special issue; cue the first of many rants into the darkness, and my first centrespread...

A few years later - during the Blaze Bayley years - Steve Harris himself admitted that the band were not at their best on this tour (he actually used the phrase "going through the motions" on a VH-1 special - I like to think he'd read my piece) so, not for the first or last time, I was RIGHT!
