Holiday in Rhodes

A hot day at Faliraki beach

Rhodes is an island in the southeast of the Aegean Sea, with an area of 1400 sq. Km., it is one of the largest and most beautiful of the Greek Islands.
The Island's climate is subtropical and healthy. The summer heat is usually moderated by refreshing westerly winds, but last year (2000 ) the temperature soared over 44C in July and August.

We have been to Rhodes four times and we never get tired of it.

The Moat of the Old City

From the first visit we have always stopped in Rhodes Town it's self. The reason for this because we like the hussle and bussle of the Old City, especially at night.
Young and old mix in the resort, but if you want a quieter appartment or hotel seek advise as many parts of both old and new town are very noisy.

Hire a car. That way no matter where you stop it's easy to get about. That's what we did. We went to Falariki Beach each day and then spent the evening in the Old Town.
The old town is a wonderful place, full of little twisting streets which suddenly open up into beautiful squares filled with tavernas and shops.

There are not any good beaches around the town, the ones that we used occasionally at the northern tip were mostly stoney and on the NW side the sea was very rough. If all you want to do is sunbathe, then you have no problem, except the sun it's self which is very strong.
On the NE side you have Mandraki Harbour with the Windmills and fortress. The harbour is usually overflowing with yachts from all over the world so it makes for a pleasant evening sitting at one of the many sidewalk cafes watching the world go by.

Mandraki Harbour

The castle in the background of the photo above is the Palace Of the Grand Master, this was a title held during the time of the Crusades. Where you see the dome is the main market and in front of that are all the sidewalk cafes. This area is popular in the evening because of the cool breeze. At the very far left hidden by the trees is a rather upmarket cafe where you can dance to a small orchestra.

This is a beautiful Island to have a relaxing holiday, but if you want, go to Faliraki and if you can keep going so will they. Another sight not to be missed is the Acropolis at Lindos a well preserved ancient monument. See the boat carved into the rock as you make you way up to it and the Temple of Athena. Wonderful views from here so don't forget the camera!
At the southermost end of the island is a lighthouse where many years ago Marilyn and I went and were made most welcome. The mechanism for the light was made in Birmingham, England.

Well this is just a quick taste of Rhodes. There are many many other places to visit , such as the Valley of the Butterflies, but all these places are fun to find, so I hope you will one day get a chance to visit and then have memories just like us.
