The only exterior shots in 2001 are those that represent the Moon's and Jupiter's surface

These shots were taken in various places such as Page (Arizona), Monument Valley and the Outer Hebrides

The Dawn of Man sequence was filmed on sets with still images of the Namib Desert in Namibia projected over them (see pictures)
