When To Go
You'll have to take into account Florida's climate - and of
course, what your goals are - when deciding on the best time
to visit as Florida's climate is split into 2 climate zones:
Subtropical in the south and
warm temperate
- like the the rest of the Southeastern USA - in the north.
These 2 zones determine the states tourist seasons, and can
effect your costs accordingly.
Anywhere
South of Orlando experiences very
mild winters (November to April), with pleasantly warm temperatures
and a low level of humidity. It also marks the best times to
visit the inland parks and swamps. This is a period when British
and European holiday makers are able to avoid the increased
numbers of children that visit during the schools summer break.
The southern summer (May to October) seems hotter than it really
is (New York is often warmer) because of a higher humidity level,
relieved occassionally by afternoon thunderstorms.
Winter is the off - peak period
north of Orlando;
in all probability, the only chill you'll detect is a slight
nip in the evening air, though it's worth bearing in mind that
at this time of year the sea is colder than in the summer months.
The Florida Sun
Any visitor with sensitive skin should bear in mind that Floida
shares a latitude with the Sahara Desert; the power of the Florida
sun should never be underestimated.
Time spent outdoors should be planned carefully, especially between
the hours of 11am and 2pm, when the sun is at its strongest. Sunscreen
is essential; anything less than SPF 25 is unlikley to offer sufficient
protection.
Wear Light coloured, loose fitting clothing, a hat, sunglasses
and always make sure you drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
