New Circus Reg Bolton was a pioneer of community circus, and portable, low-tech shows, a man after my own heart.
We worked together as circus-for-all enthusiasts in the late 1970s, and we didn't meet again since he moved to Australia, but I knew that he carried on that work - even got a Ph.D in it all, so I regret to announce that I just received news of his death - peacefully alone in bed, probably a heart attack.
'My present research, and this book, were made possible because the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Edinburgh City Council decided in 1977 to back my idea of a Scottish summer school of circus skills. A diligent genealogist might track direct lines from that school (and the three subsequent annual repeats) to New Circus activities all over the world. The time was right and, even in 1977, students from 9 countries converged on Edinburgh for 2 weeks intensive study of circus skills and community circus formats, with Emil Wolk, Toby Philpott, Paula Melbourne, Annie Stainer and me.'
