Creatine kinase (CK)- also known as phosphocreatine
kinase is normally found in muscle cells Its normal
function is to turn creatine into phosphocreatine.
Phosphocreatine is burned by our cells as a quick
source of energy. If muscles are diseased or damaged as with the
case with Duchenne or Becker MD (and some other disorders)
amounts of CK will also leak into the blood and this can be measured. From what
I understand the amount of
CK is measured in units of enzyme activity per litre of serum (U/L - units per litre ).
( You may ask do I understand this and the
answer is no) - Tim
