We all spared a thought for
Angela laying on a white beach in Mauritius as we congregated in the wet
and misty car park at the top of Reigate Hill. With The town shrouded in a
rainy mist below us four F's braved the elements and were already looking
forward to the warmth of the pub at the end of the first of Tim's Tiny
Tours. First, though, there was a bit of challenging driving to take care
of. First challenge was to find some fuel for TimM , who had forgotten to
bring any petrol with him. With that task completed halfway down Reigate
Hill we managed to find each other again and drove in convoy through
Reigate and off in to the Downs. The next challenge was getting up the the
steep incline just outside the town on Park Street with the leaves, rain
and branches dripping from the trees we made it to the top only to test
the ABS on the way down the other side of this single track road as a car
suddenly came in the opposite direction.
Once over the other side the roads were not too bad as we headed for
Leigh and Newdigate. Mostly with two way traffic we left Capel and headed
back to London on the A24 veering off in to the woods again at Ockley
where we turned in to Weare Street. A single track road surrounded by
trees and streams it proved to be very picturesque with the leaves in late
autumn colour , those that were still of the trees of course. At times the
road became indistinguishable from the surrounding forest floor as we
drove gingerly over a mat of fallen leaves. It was certainly another
challenge and with my co driver helpfully telling me to slow down rather a
lot we managed to find our way to the A29. From there it was a short trip
to Oakwoodhill and the safety of the Punchbowl Pub. Barry managed to
collect a small branch under his car which he took to the pub with him,
later extricated by TimJ. With sporadic downpourings of rain we were now
safe and warm for Sunday lunch but sadly the Fursty Ferret had been
replaced by another brew - the Goose - for the winter. It tasted just as
good mind you !.
