| It was Bank
Holiday Monday - the Easter Turkey had been eaten and Cadburys profits
risen dramatically so it was an ideal time to grip the steering wheel and
blow those cobwebs out of the K series with a Spring run across Hampshire
and Sussex.
What better road to do it on than the A272 - a great contrasting route
with country bends , small pretty villages, loads of daffodils and long
straights just right to open up the throttle (luckily the boys in blue had
their camera pointing the other way - not that we would exceed the speed
limit of course).
Starting in Waitrose car park at Petersfield we gathered six Fs
together with Pip holding up the TF flag with his silver Sunstorm. Hanging
about waiting for any latecomers we watched as a blonde girl in a solar
red F drove up to us and straight on by with a quizzical expression and a
car full of waitrose bags - you have to get the shopping in I guess.
A lone russett brown B then drove into view and with all of us accounted
for we were ready to set off.
The A272 is beloved of motorcyclists and we soon found out why as we
turned on to the road towards Midhurst - with the sun managing to peak
through the clouds and all tops down we hits the accelerators only to be
rapidly overtaken by leather clad riders astride their gleaming machines
and at speeds even our most daring Fers wouldn't consider on public roads
- what do those solid white lines in the middle of the road mean
anyway.
Luckily there was not too much bank holiday traffic going east to west
to hold us up so we made good time through the villages and towns until we
were out the other side of Haywards Heath and looking for that wrought
Iron sign to show us we had arrived in Newick and The Bull Inn.
A couple of us found spaces at the front of the pub on the village
green whilst the rest of us got entangled with an irate local as we
blocked their access road with five Fs and a B. With the local placated
the rest of us found the official place to park in the car park at the
back of the Pub. With no more natives upsetting we settled down to enjoy
our pints of Harveys or Greene King and tackle the ordering of lunch. No
easy task as the staff seemed to think they were busy at first and
couldn't serve us - then they decided they weren't and they could -
confused - we were . We did get our lunch however and it was
actually pretty good as we ate on the front terrace overlooking the
village Green. From there we could admire the amount of classic cars
driving along the road including a Citroen DS, TR3, E Type jag and
of course - the ubiquitous motor cycles by the dozen.
Nice run out and we welcomed a couple of newcomers in the form of Pip
and his TF and Mark in his Nightfire red F. After the convivial lunch we
all went our seperate ways - Mark to Plumpton races, Tim & Liz to
Sheffield Park Gardens, Kev to the Bluebell railway, Rob & Elaine to
the nearest Garden Centre and the rest to...who knows where - probably
back along the 272 to enjoy it in the opposite direction - didn't see many
bunnies though ! |
