The Alternatives
There are several alternative solutions available for copying files between SIBO or EPOC and RISC OS computers, each with their own advantages and disadvantages:
Interconnex's PsiRisc is also a full filing system that uses the Psion Link Protocol and works with both SIBO and EPOC devices. Unlike PsiFS it includes some file conversion facilities, although that is less significant now that there are several freeware conversion utilities. The main disadvantage of PsiRisc is that it is a relatively expensive commercial package. |
Paul Vigay's ArcLink5 is a shareware package that requires an OPL program to be downloaded and run on the EPOC device. It is slow at opening directories, but it can copy files significantly faster than any of the alternatives. The current version has several limitations, such as only supporting EPOC devices and only allowing a single directory to be opened at a time. |
Acorn's PocketFS allows drag and drop file transfer and conversions with Psion Series 3/3a and Acorn PocketBook I/II machines. With Gareth Babb's patch this can be made to work with Psion Series 3c/3mx machines and at higher baud rates. |
Psion's RCOM or PsiWin software can be run on a PC card. This requires a PC card or podule to be fitted to the computer, and it is probably overkill starting Windows just to transfer a few files. |
Standard terminal software can be run on both computers. The necessary software is freely available, for example Andreas Zieringer's Connector under RISC OS. However, this approach is far from user friendly, and directory structures cannot be automatically copied. |

For an independent comparison of all the options have a look at John Woodthorpe's ArmLink site.
