ARMEdit
Features
The ARMEdit suite provides a wide variety of tools to aid the integration of PC cards into the RISC OS environment. Some of the highlights include:
*   A collection of utilities to transfer files between RISC OS and PC partitions while the PC card is active, and to perform RISC OS *commands from DOS. These are suitable for use from batch files.
*   The ability to edit DOS files using a RISC OS text editor.
*   A DOS device driver that allows RISC OS filesystems to be read from the PC environment like standard harddiscs.
*   A RISC OS front-end allowing multiple PC card configurations to be defined and used, and providing easy installation and configuration of the whole suite.
*   A command to allow the multitasking speed of the PC front-end to be controllled.
*   Documentation, header files and object code to allow extra PC utilities to be written using the communication and RISC OS services.

An easy to use desktop front-end application allows the software to be quickly installed and configured ready for the first use. It is no longer necessary to manually copy files into the PC partition.

Comprehensive configuration options allow simple customisation of the suite. It is also possible to create and edit multiple PC card configurations that can be activated by a single menu selection. Each configuration can also have associated files that are automatically copied into the PC partition before starting the PC card software.

The front-end also provides support for extending the functionality of other parts of the suite, such as the ARMEDIT, OSCLI and PUTFILE commands.

A DOS device driver ARMEDIT.SYS allows RISC OS filesystems to be read via standard DOS drives. This provides a powerful and useful extension to the PC card:
*   Web page designers can edit their pages under RISC OS and then view them using Internet Explorer or Netscape on the PC card without copying the files to the PC partition. This makes testing changes quick and easy.
*   Files can be accessed directly from archives by using SparkFS or similar image filesystems under RISC OS.
*   Some CD-ROMs, such as Encarta 98, do not work via the standard Aleph One drivers. Using ARMEDIT.SYS to access the CD via RISC OS CDFS allows such software to be used. This is currently the only way to access Joliet CDs with the PC card.
*   More than two harddisc partitions may be read. This can be especially useful when copying files between partitions.

This device driver may be used with DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups and Windows 95. When used with Windows 95 long filenames are fully supported.

Several DOS utilities are also included in the suite:
ARMEDIT.COM Allows DOS files to be edited using a RISC OS editor using the External Data Editing Protocol (supported by both !Zap and !StrongEd). This command is the original reason for the suite's name.
GETFILE.COM and PUTFILE.COM Utilities like those supplied with the Acorn software PC emulator, but enhanced to make them easier to use. Both wildcards and recursion through subdirectories are supported. PUTFILE can also use a standard RISC OS Save as window to specify the destination filename, or to load a file straight into another application.
OSCLI.COM xecutes RISC OS *commands at a DOS prompt, with the input and output streams tied to those of the DOS command. The commands may optionally be executed in a TaskWindow, and VDU sequences can be processed prior to display of the output.
