8. River Scrape

This area comprises a large "puddle" in a grass meadow on the bank of the River Thames but perhaps surprisingly attracts passing waders albeit briefly. Rather like the Days Lock Scrape it soon dries out without rain and is only productive during spring and early summer. Unfortunately it is very close to the Thames towpath and any birds are easily disturbed. It is therefore best visited early morning before walkers are about but even then anglers could be along the river bank. The flock of Canada Geese frequent this area and, over the years Bean Geese, White Fronted Geese and Bewick Swans have been seen here together with the "hangers on" such as Egyptian Goose, Lesser White Front, Bar-headed, Greylag, Barnacle and various Hybrids. Waders seen include Common and Green Sandpiper, Little and Ringed Plover, Ruff, Redshank, Golden Plover, Lapwing, Dunlin, Snipe and the star turn put on by a Pectoral Sandpiper.
