2. Drayton Road Pit

Being so close to Queenford Pit many of the birds seen there find their way on to Drayton Road Pit especially when skiing is underway. It is probably the preferred water, in the winter, for Pochard, Tufted Duck and Mallard, large numbers of which are often present. In recent winters the large Wigeon flock, usually with a few Teal, seem to share their time between this water and the Allen Pit. Sightings of Pintail, Goldeneye, Goosander and Red-breasted Merganser are fairly regular. Some of the more unusual water birds seen on this water have included Mandarin, Red-crested Pochard, American Wigeon, Slavonion Grebe and Little Auk. Most of the common warblers turn up in the trees and bushes around the lake and fox and Muntjac deer can sometimes be seen on the opposite bank. Kingfishers breed in the bank on the opposite side of the lake most years. It is probably one of my favourite lakes as the discovery of an Arctic Skua, more years ago than I care to remember, was largely responsible for starting me off birdwatching.
