6. Cemetery Pit
This is probably the oldest lake in the Dorchester complex with well established trees around the edges. It covers a relatively small area and, therefore, numbers and varieties of water birds are small. This lake has resident pairs of Great Crested Grebes, Mute Swans and Canada Geese and other common ducks occur from time to time. The surrounding trees and bushes are generally more productive than the water with most of the common warblers turning up during migration and good numbers staying to breed. Lesser and Great spotted Woodpeckers have been recorded here and it is a good spot for other woodland species. It was, several years ago, a fairly reliable site for wintering Green Sandpipers but not recently. The cemetery, alongside this lake, is the only location that I know of, within the Dorchester complex, that regularly has a pair of breeding Spotted Flycatchers.
