General Notes:
HIGTON MEMORABILIA
The following found their way to us after Joy's mother died
They either came down from Annie Heathcote (Orme), Joy's grandmother, died 1 January 1952 or Maud Wheeldon, Julia Higton's daughter by Samuel Wheeldon, died 16 June 1950 With the death dates being so close Joy is not certain on this point.
P.Higton in what follows is Phillis (dau. Of Phineas). There are a few books with no “inscription” on the fly sheet. Based on the publication dates I would think that they also were Phillis's. Certainly too early to have been Maud's in the first instance.
History of Insects (published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knokwledge). Fly sheet inscription “Ann Walker. A reward for Good Conduct Alderwasley 1834” Book of Common Prayer. Fly sheet inscription “Mary Higton Alderwasley Hall March 27 1868 The Holy Bible. Fly sheet inscription “Annie. A present from her Father”. Annie is Annie Orme. Father - Daniel. The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith. P. Higton on fly sheet Kenilworth by Sir Walter Scott. Phillis Higton Dec 25th 1882 on fly sheet He That Will Not When He May Be by Mrs. Oliphant. P. Higton on fly sheet Pine Needles by Wetherell. P. Higton on fly sheet Queen Victoria. Story of Her Life and Reign. P. Higton on fly sheet. Subsequently given by Phillis to Maud Wheeldon. St. George's Key, A Tale for Boys. Fly sheet inscribed “Phillis Higton from Charlotte April 4th /70”. Subsequently given by Phillis to Maud Wheeldon. The Secret of a Life by MM Bell. Flysheet inscribed “Phillis Higton/69”. The Fishers of Derby Haven. No authors name. Fly sheet inscribed “Phillis Higton from Mrs. G. April 4th/70. Subsequently given by Phillis to Maud Wheeldon. Little Women by Louisa M Alcott. Phillis Higton on fly sheet. Subsequently given by Phillis to Maud Wheeldon.. Little Men by Louisa M Alcott. Phillis Higton on fly sheet. Jane Bouverie and How She Became an Old Maid by Catherine Sinclair. Fly sheet inscribed P Higton from Mrs Gauring ”. Gauring may well not be right. The”ur” is my best guess based on the handwriting. Feats on the Fiord by Harriet Martineau. Inscribed “Phillis Higton with TS's kind regards. Xmas 1879. This is written on a piece of lined paper and stuck in. My reading of the initials may be wrong. I could have easily read it as “IG”. Subsequently given to Maud Wheeldon.
