William PEAT of Cunnigree aforesaid farmer
I think you'll find that Cunningree is in North Wingfield. The house no longer exists, but an industrial estate now called Coney Green is on the site today. From my notes about my BRAILSFORD family, (who lived there in C16 and C17):- This old farm still exists on modern maps. The large-scale (3 inches to the mile) Philip's Ordnance Survey Street Map of Derbyshire shows the modern spelling of 'Coney Green Farm' on p.131. It is NE of Clay Cross, just to the east of Egstow (which is on the NE edge of Clay Cross) and only half a mile SW of North Wingfield. It is south of the A6175 road, about half way between the built-up areas of the two towns. Ince says the PEAT family come from Ashleyhay, and the only place like "Cunningree" near Ashleyhay I can find is Coneygreave Farm ( its about 1.5 miles SE of Wirksworth). Campbell's "Placenames of Derbyshire" says that Coneygreave means rabbit warren, and says this is "one of many modern forms". I reckon this farm is a good bet for your PEATs. By the way, "Ashleyhay" is a placename that has vanished from modern OS maps, but is still there on old signposts,
Cunnigree, aka Coney Greave, is almost certainly the farm at Ashleyhay, which is the civil parish next to Alderwasley, and still named on the current 1:25000 OS map. Nearby is Peat Lane, Peat Pits etc, and the farm is next to that called the Fish Pools, aka Fish Ponds, where another branch of Peats used to live. I should definitely discount all references to the Coney Grey near Clay Cross, which is too far away.
William married Hannah (Ann) Mather, daughter of Benjamin Mather and Elizabeth Held, in 1744 in Duffield, Derbyshire, England. (Hannah (Ann) Mather was born in 1722 and died in 1792.)
