How To Change Compression Of An AVI

You will need the following tool:

  • VirtualDub (FREEWARE) - Click HERE to download

Why do we need to change the compression of a file?

Quite simply put, if you have a file that is large in size, taking up valuable HardDrive space or wish to reduce the file size making it easier to share or upload over a peer2peer network, without losing the quality of the file. Then that surley is a good thing. Right?

In this tutorial i will show you how to turn a large DivX file into a XviD file with Lame MP3 Audio compression.

What does that all mean?

I'm gonna take a file about 900mb in size and turn it into about 700mb size!

1st. Open Virtual Dub and load the File. (Click File, Open File)

2nd. It should look like this. Now click VIDEO tab and ensure FULL PROCESSING MODE has a dot after it, then click COMPRESSION.

3rd. We will now select what CODEC (Compression) you want to shrink it down to, i suggest you choose the XviD codec. MPEG-4 really is a great level of compression.

NOTE: You must have the codecs installed in the first place. If you don't, visit my CODECS page HERE and download for free.

4th. So now scroll to the XVID codec and click once, then click OK.

5th. Now its time for the audio compression. Click on AUDIO tab and ensure again FULL PROCESSING MODE has a dot next to it and select again, COMPRESSION.

6th. We will now select the LAME MP3 CODEC for audio, i find this erally good quality, and with MP3 being one of the best levels of compression about, why not select it!

Ensure you select 44100Hz and about 192kb/s, i find this a happy medium without increasing the final product too much.

Then click OK

7th. Now click FILE at the top again and SAVE AS... give the file a name. (eg. the Matrix.XviD.LaMEmp3.TS) or anything you like! Just make sure its different to the original file name!

And away VD goes, sit back and wait for the final product, a nice compressed good quality file.

Enjoy!
