| The Rainbow Project
is a voluntary organisation and a company limited by guarantee which
has been working in Southampton since 1981. As well as practical
help with accommodation the Project also works with young people
offering an advice and information service.
Prospective residents must be aged between 16-25 years old and
be able to live independently. As Rainbow offers supported housing
there must also be a need for the support of the Project's workers.
There is an expectation that residents will co-operate with their
housing worker to access training, further education and employment
opportunities. Individual Development Plans are used with all the
young people the Project works with to monitor progress and maximise
the support offered.
Workers will give advice, guidance on a variety of issues and emotional
support to raise self-esteem and build self confidence. They work
closely with individuals and also groups of young people, for example,
regular monthly House Meetings are held. Support will also be offered
to find move-on accommodation plus on-going support for up to 2
years through the Project's 2 Floating Support services for ex-residents.
The Project does not ask for deposits, key money or rent in advance
and young people will be housed regardless of income providing benefits
can be accessed.
As well as the 2 floating support services above the Project operates
3 others:
Iris floating support service is for lone mothers aged, 16 –
19, living in their own independent accommodation within the Southampton
area.
Lighthouse floating support service is for young single people,
aged 16 – 25, living in their own independent accommodation
within the Southampton area.
Western Challenge Housing Association provide and manage 3 one
bedroom, self-contained flats for under 18's. Rainbow employs a
Project worker to support the residents.
In addition to working with residents, the Project staff will give
advice and assistance to any young person or agency who contacts
the Project.
