Jules

the Dog

Jules started life in January 1991 as the only brown and white pup in a litter. He's about 6 months old on the left.

Bred from a collie sheepdog and a small long haired terrier, he was originally my girlfriend Celia's dog, pictured right.

When he was 2 years old, she asked me to take him on permanently, mainly due to my outdoor lifestyle.

A celebration of his life 1991-2008

Jules journeyed to the vet in my van when he was only days old, resulting in him always feeling completely at home in it. He would panic when left indoors by himself, so I would put him in the van instead. He knew I wouldn't be too far away.

He became an ideal companion around the streets and parks of Cardiff. He ran alongside my bike with limitless energy. We also covered countless miles on the Taff Trail between Cardiff and Brecon.

My 'outdoor lifestyle' included jaunts to the coast. So, Jules enjoyed regular camping adventures in West Wales and the Gower, Devon and Cornwall.  The best beaches are usually hard to access and dog friendly, so they were the places that Jules got used to in the many wonderful summers we've had over the years, the sea and breezes kept him cool. His frisbee skills being second to none.

Although he went through small phases of naughtiness in earlier years as most dogs would, he became a very obedient dog, and never needed a lead. He was never formally trained and didn't know the meaning of the word 'sit'.
Three Cliffs Bay, Gower was another favourite of ours. After going for a swim, I would paddle the length of the beach playing frisbee with him until we reached the goat at the other end. Here's a rare picture of me with Jules taken overlooking Worms Head, Gower. I've had a shave since then. Just my face I mean.

When camping, at night he loved to lie outside my van awning and just watch, listen and smell the atmosphere. Although he didn't much like open fires ! Pictured above at Llangennith, Gower.
