The Hare at Southcott Village does not appear by name until 1876, but a beer shop had been operating in Southcott since at least 1847. Its first Landlady was a Mrs Ann Woodman the widow of the village wheelwright. Southcott remained a predominately farming community, little affected by the canal and railway. In 1861 the beer shop was taken over by Jane Eggleton, the wife of Robert Eggleton the village shepherd. They ran it until it was sold in 1876 with the rest of the estate of Mrs Eliza Cumberledge. The Hare, which looks over the village green was bought by Thomas Birdsey a Southcott farmer for £2,000, and it continues selling beer to this day.
