Thinking that a raw beginner would find it tricky to warm instantly to the delights of Minotaur, Dismember and Hypocrisy, I set about on this definitive compilation of important METAL bands. OK, so there's no Manowar, but then I haven't got any...

None of these are the obvious "hit singles", but I was also trying to cram on as many bands as possible without sacrificing quality. This is the result, charting the beginnings of metal to the middle of the 90's when nu-metal kicked in and ruined everything.
