How wonderful - a tea room open after 5pm! So often, after having consumed a large Sunday roast, the thought of tea and cake at 3.30pm makes me feel ill! However, give me an hour or so and I'm ready for round two!

The Gatehouse is a nice cosy tea room to visit in winter, with soft lighting, a lovely warm carpet and luxurious curtains. The dark wooden furniture is complemented by pretty floral table cloths. In the summer the French doors are opened, and tables and chairs set out overlooking the fields.

I'm a traditional girl at heart, with a real love for that unusual sweet and savoury combination, and what better way to experience it than in a moist slice of date and walnut cake, spread thickly with butter - scrumptious! However, this is only one of several home made cakes waiting to be sampled. Being a chocaholic, my husband loved the chocolate cake with lashings of cream. Lunchtime visitors will find plenty to tempt them, including pilchards on toast, a tasty dish not often seen on many menus today.

The tea room also has a nice little craft room to tempt you and you can view a range of garden ornaments for sale outside, too.
