Compass Sport Cup Final - 16 Oct 2005

Over 60 club members made the trip across the pennines to Clowbridge to compete in the final of this year's Compass Sport Cup. Sadly EBOR ended the day in 9th place - but this was not too surprising since we had only qualified from our group as runners-up.

Many thanks to all those who turned out to help the club and particularly to the 25 scorers. Best individual performances came from Cathy Odell (7th in Short Green-Veterans) and Barrie Speake (20th in Green-Men). Not surprisingly these were the two courses on which we ranked highest relative to all the other clubs (1st and 2nd, respectively). All the other clubs had their highest scores from Brown and Blue-Men, and these courses and Blue-Women were where we were at our weakest.

YHOA neighbour's AIRE came in 3rd place, helped by having the strongest junior contingent, behind OD and BOK.

Matt represents GB again at World Champs

Club member Matt Speake represented great Britain again in the 2005 World Orienteering Championships held in Japan in August. He was selected for both the Sprint event and the relay. In the short distance event he reached the final, finishing in 41st place. In the relay the team finished in 9th place.

Overall the team performance was similar to the high standards of recent years, despite Jamie Stevenson having to pull out with an injury, and Britain is now ranked 5th in the world. Individually Heather Monro won a bronze medal in the women's Sprint event - only the 3rd ever individual medal to be won by Great Britain.

Sucessess at British Championships (Penhale Sands, Cornwall)

Congratulations to the following who gained top 5 places:

Class Name Place
M10A Zac Field 1
M35S Tony Udris 1
W14A Alice Leake 2
W18S Heather Percy 2
W50 Relay team 2

Our biggest success would have been an ex-EBOR team which would have made a big splash in W21E with Aislinn Austin 4th, Jenny Whitehead 5th and Cath Wilson 7th.

Successes at JK (Sutton Coldfield)

Congratulations to Peter Roberts for winning the Paraolympic Trail-O event at the JK. This was only his second Trail-O event. He will be hoping for further success in the British Champs.
zak winning U10A at JK 05

The best EBOR result in the juniors was by Zak winning M10A.

Other Junior successes were in:

  • W14A - 2nd place overall for Alice Leake, and 3rd place on day 1 for Harriet Andrews
  • M16B won by Jack Schmuck
  • U-12 relay where the EBOR team took second place.

In the Women's events Celia Wells and Jillian Currey took both 1st & 2nd places in W65L, and Pauline Percy won W40S.

Matt Speake was again our top performer in the elite classes taking 10th in M21E. Congratulations to all.

2004 Ranking List Successes

Ebor had 2 S-class winners in the 2004 rankings - Tony Udris in M35S & Karen Clark in W45S. Other top-5 places were achieved by Pauline Percy & Louise Dunn, 2nd & 3rd, respectively, in W40S.

In the womens long classes Jill Currey just missed out on top spot in W65L with Celia Wells very close behind in 5th place. Christine Andrews picked up 6th spot in W45L, with Helen Gardner 7th in W50L.

In the mens long classes Matt Speake came highest with 8th in M21L with dad Barrie just behind, so-to-speak, with 9th in M60L.

Congratulations to them all.

Alice Sees Off Foreign Opposition at the Interland

In the Interland international meeting, held in Belgium in February, Alice Leake represented England in W14. She comfortably beat all her international opponents - from Holland, Belgium and Germany. Unfortunately, with 2 team-mates ahead of her, she had to settle for 3rd place.
Congratulations on a great result, Alice.

Former Eborienteer, Cath Wilson, also scored for England coming 5th in W21.

England were comfortable winners of the overall competition.

Steve Willis planning for the White Rose

Steve Willis was spotted in the snow during February doing some planning for the bike-o event for this summer's White Rose weekend.

Annual Dinner - Relay Presentation

About 40 Eborienteers attended a successful annual dinner at Lady Anne Middleton's hotel on 22nd Jan. The waiters even attempted to recreate the authentic ice cold winter orienteering experience by turning off the portable heaters - but they were quickly overruled!

Linda and Steve Whitehead. Winners of 2004 club relay

Afterwards a long overdue award presentation was made to Linda Whitehead and her team-mate Steve for winning the 2004 Club relay.

Alice Picked for England - 20th Feb

Alice Leake has been selected to represent England in the Interland Match, after getting a first and two seconds in the three selection races. The match is in Ossendrecht Forest 25km north of Antwerp on Sunday 20th February.

Congratulations to Alice and good luck!

Compass Sport Cup

Note change in rules benefits the very old!!

This is an annual interclub competition. I think it’s best if as many people as possible go, so don’t worry if you think you’re not good enough – there is no limit to the numbers we can have and it’s our best ones on the day who count (and it’s good to have back up in case the superstars mispunch).

The event is at Cropton near Pickering on Sunday February 27th. Send/give/phone your entries to me by 6th February please in the following format: Name BOF class SI no. Course Phone no.

Courses are Orange, Light Green, Green (men), Green (women), Blue (men), Blue (women), Brown. There are no event details yet but I guess there will be Yellow and White courses outside the cup competition for the very young members. Below are the rules on which courses you can run competitively (any one can run a longer course than the one suggested):

M/W14 or younger: Orange
M/W18 or 16: Light Green
W20: Green (women)
M20: Blue (men)
M21, 35, 40: Brown
W21, 35, 40: Blue (women)
M45, 50, 55: Blue (men)
W45, W50, W55: Green (women)
M60, M65, M70: Green (men)
M75+: Short Green
W60+: Short Green

Our best 25 positions to count with up to 4 in each course and up to 6 on Brown and Blue (men). There are various other rules that generally mean we need as many people as possible to enter (e.g. at least 1 of the Brown scorers can not be M21).

Looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible (tell me if you want to run in the JK relays and British relays at the same time!).
