How to Pack & post a tarantula

The following sequence of photos will show how to package a medium sized tarantula, in the demonstration I used an adult female Aphonopelma bicoloratum, for which a cricket tub is a nice sized pot to use, for larger spiders a larger tub will be needed, yet the principle remains the same, for larger spiders like salmon pink or goliath I would use maybe an icecream tub.

for this example i have used a cricket tub for the adult tarantula and a film pot would be used for a spiderling. if the spider is going to be in the post for more than one day, then i would recommend a light misting of water in one corner of the tub.

fold a piece of kitchen towel and place in the bottom, then take 2 squares and fold length ways and roll it around your hand, this will be the compartment for the spider, then pack both ends with more towel to prevent the compartment moving.

Next using the bottle capture method, place the spider in the compartment you have already prepared. If the spider is reluctant to leave the bottle, you can remove the lid and nudge the spider with a chop stick from the top part of the bottle.

Next is a folded piece of kitchen towel on top of the compartment to keep the spider in that location, this will also add as packaging as there is no guarentee the box will remain upright while in transit. the spider is now packaged on all sides.

If you are sending one spider, or several spiders, make sure all pots are clearly labled, ant the lid secured down with tape.

Now you line the base of the box with bubble wrap or newspaper, place the spider tub in, and pack all round the edges so the pot containing the spider can not move.

before you place the lid on, more packaging on top, so the spider is packaged on all sides, the same as we did with the cricket tub.

make sure the recipient and the senders address are clearly visible on the box, and it is recommended that it be sent next day delivery.
