Hellband is a variant of the hugely popular game called Angband. It is a 'Rogue-Like' game. This means that it is a turn-based game where you take control of a single character who delves deep into a dungeon full of monsters and treasure.
As with most Roguelike games, the graphics and sound capabilities are rather limited, with emphasis instead on gameplay.
Hellband takes its theme from Dante's Inferno. As such, most of the Tolkien influence has been replaced by a Hell motif. Instead of battling down the Pits of Angband to fight Morgoth, you battle down the Circles of Hell to fight Lucifer.
Hellband uses a 'realm' based magic system similar to the one used in Zangband, but also includes many new features of its own.
The latest version of Hellband is version 1.0.3. It can be downloaded from the links at the top of this page.
A full list of changes made in all versions of Hellband and its predecessors can be found here.
Hellband is completely free. As is the sourcecode. You freely download it, copy it, and do whatever else you like with it as long as you do not charge anyone else for it.
I do - Dean Anderson. I maintain this variant of Angband, updating it as and when I feel like. Any feedback should be emailed to me here.
The Windows version of Hellband requires either DOS or Windows 95 or higher. If you can run a recent version of Windows then your computer is easily capable of running Hellband. The Hellband sourcecode is based on the sourcecode of the Angband game - which has multiple versions available for different platforms. This means that in theory, versions of Hellband can be compiled on a variety of different platforms. Unfortunately, I don't have the resources to do this myself - so if you want any other version, you will have to either compile it yourself or search for someone who has.
Hellband does not have a discussion group of its own. However, the rec.games.roguelike.angband newsgroup will have discussion on this and other variants of Angband.
The official Angband website lists many variants of Angband, for a wide variety of platforms.
