We at Staffords.me.uk would like to express our profound sympathies and condolences to the family of five year old Ellie Lawrenson who was attacked and killed by a pit bull type dog which was owned by her uncle.

We would like to point out that while the Stafford is NOT a pit bull, we utterly deplore the encouraging of any bull breed to engage in aggressive behaviour, either towards people or other dogs and animals. The bull breeds are courageous animals and were originally bred for fighting and when used as such could be expected to behave agressively. Nowadays, dog fighting is illegal and although the bull breeds often dislike their fellow canines, they are now encouraged to tolerate other dogs and even socialise and maintain good friendly relationships with them. They are now mostly bred for good temperament and conformation to the breed standard, not for 'gameness' in the fighting pit. This is especially true of the Staffordshire bull terrier and we strongly condemn any use of them for aggressive activities and intimidation purposes.

Any dog of any breed can be nasty and bite. We always encourage people to be responsible dog owners, especially when you have a big strong animal like a Stafford, and to make sure their dogs will NEVER be allowed to show aggression towards humans and to be actively discouraged from being aggressive towards other dogs.
