THE OLD TOWN
Around this castle and the church close by, the little town grew up, and progressed The town in existence then did not extend very far from the parish church, and most of the houses occupied the space between the church and the castle. One must remember that the buildings of the age were much smaller than nowadays, and built so close together that persons could often almost touch each other from their respective chamber windows on opposite sides of the street.
The Market Place appears to have been the only real street, with the Wylde leading from it, and many courts and alleys connected with both. A few houses there were in Bury Lane, now Bolton Street, but the Lane ended very quickly in a pathway down the slope to the ford across the river. In the Market Place stood the old Market Cross, the Court House, and, not far away, the Dungeon.
