school 2 to 3½ hours per day. |
| 1870 | Provision of schools sufficient for all children made compulsory. |

| 1876 | Attendance at school made compulsory. |
| 1891 | Children under 12 debarred from factories, and education made free. |
| 1903 | All children from 5 to 12 to attend school. |
| 1926 | All children from 5 to 14 to attend school, full time. Many continue
at school till 18. |
