PLAYING FIELDS
Mention should also be made of the five beautiful recreation grounds situated in different parts of the borough, one or other of which is easily accessible from any portion of the town. All are beautifully laid out, four contain bandstands and very often excellent concerts take place. Large areas in them are devoted to outdoor games :-
gymnasia for children ; tennis-courts for its devotees ; and bowling greens for patrons of this pastime. In addition there are playing fields in three of them. The Sports Club is the premier organisation for games and sports in the district, and on its magnificent field or fields, Cricket by the town team; Association Football ; Rugby Football; Athletics ; Hockey ; and Tennis are well catered for. The Bury Football Club is also well-known for its truly excellent ground, at Gigg Lane. The team is a member of the English League (First Division) and has won many honours in the football world, including the English Cup (twice) in 1899-1900 and 1902-3
