MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS
The Fire Station was opened in 1880 in Stanley Street, but has been very recently reconstructed, and is now quite modern and imposing. The present Station was opened on October 7th, 1925, and consists of an up-to-date hall. Its equipment contains an engine, built by Morris, of Manchester ; two Leyland Motor Engines, and a smaller Ford Motor, with Pump, for farm fires. There is also a Hose Carrier, with a 70 foot Fire Escape, and two Motor Ambulances. The present Superintendent, Mr. Fargher has been in the Brigade nearly 50 years.
The first Electricity Works were opened in 1896, at Whitehead Bridge, but were soon found to be inadequate, and the Chamber Hall estate was bought cleared, and a fine, large new works erected there. This station was opened in 1911.
The Abattoirs and Cold Air Stores are also new, well adapted buildings on the Pair Ground, adjoining Knowsley Street Goods Depot. They were opened in 1903.
The General Post Office is not under the Municipality, but is quite in keeping with other public buildings. The premises are in Crompton Street, and, having been recently enlarged, are commodious and well adapted.
Another magnificent public building which must be mentioned is the fine Dispensary Hospital, in Walmersley Road, erected at a cost of about £13,800 and opened on March 25th, 1882. In 1893, a new wing was added, and further extensions were made in 1908 The children's ward, opened in November, 1924, forms part of the Bury War Memorial; the cost was £12,000, and in addition it is endowed with over £30,000. The whole of this amount was raised by public subscriptions.
