MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT contd.
| The foregoing gives some idea of committee work. It remains to add that
there are in addition the following Committees :- Education, Housing, Gas, Tramways,
Electricity, Fire Brigade, Lighting, Baths, Markets, Parliamentary, Furnishing, Stationery,
Bye-Laws, Art Gallery and Library, Recreation Grounds and Cemetery, etc., each denoting
its work by its title. |
To aid these Committees, the Council employs the following permanent officials as expert advisers :-
The Town Clerk, who is also the legal adviser to the Council.
The Borough Treasurer.
The Borough Engineer and Surveyor.
The Medical Officer of Health.
The Director of Education.
The Gas Engineer.
The Tramways Manager.
The Electrical Engineer.
The Curator and Librarian.
The Sewage Works Manager.
The Superintendents of Fire Brigade, Baths, Markets, Cleansing.
The Head Gardener.
The Cemetery Registrar.
| In this short survey of our local government, it will be seen that each
Councillor is charged with very heavy responsibility. He is the custodian of our welfare, and
we, as future citizens of Bury must see to it that in exercising our votes in the years to
come we only elect men burning with a zeal for the common good - men who shall be worthy
successors to those who have borne the brunt of the battle during the last fifty years. To
be a Councillor is to be a servant of one's town, surely a reward great enough for any man.
