The Bury and District Joint Hospital Board was formed in 1903, and comprises
the districts of Bury, Radcliffe, Ramsbottom, Tottington, Whitefield, and the
Rural District of Bury. Its duties are to provide facilities for dealing with
infectious diseases. Hospitals have been provided:- "The Florence Nightingale,"
for such cases as Scarlet Fever, Diphtheria, etc. ; "The Ainsworth," for Smallpox,
and the Aitken Sanatorium at Holcombe, for Tuberculosis. The expenses of the
Board are recovered from the respective authorities by levy, and also on the
basis of usage.
