CO-OPERATION
In the latter half of the century, a great movement commenced in Lancashire, which has resulted in great benefits to all sections of the community. In 1851, an attempt was made by Co-operation to counteract the evils of the Truck Shop System, in Bury, This first attempt was not a success. In a year or two its trade dwindled, and the venture faded away. Co-operation, as we now know it, was not to be denied and in 1855 another very modest beginning was inaugurated, and the Bury and District Co-operative Society came into being. The history of the beginnings of the Society is given in another chapter of this story.
