FOREWORD |
| While it is not intended that this Souvenir of the Fiftieth Anniversary
of the Incorporation of the Borough of Bury, shall be considered a complete
history of the town it is hoped that those into whose hands it falls will be
induced by it to take a greater interest in the well-being of its citizens,
and the work of the Municipality. |
| The Souvenir has been written for the School children, and I feel sure
that if they will read the book carefully, and think about the work which
has been done during the last 50 years, they will realise, especially as they
grow older, how important a factor is local government in making for the
happiness and well-being of the inhabitants of a large town. |
| The illustrations show some of our important public buildings, mostly
erected during the period under review, and I think it would be interesting
to readers if they were to compare these illustrations with Mr. James Shaw's
paintings of old buildings now in the Public Museum. |
| It is impossible in a work of this nature to set out in detail the manner
in which the town of Bury has grown, both municipally and in private enterprise,
but I think I may safely say that the inhabitants have every reason to be proud of
their town, and may look forward to greater progress and success in the years which
are before us. |
| I cannot conclude my short foreword without expressing, on behalf of the Corporation,
my great appreciation of the work of Messrs. H. A. Norman J. Robinson, C. Rothwell, and
I. M. S. Russell, in producing this Souvenir, of Mr. W. Hopkinson's work in designing the
cover, and of the services of the teachers generally in their efforts to make the Civic
Jubilee a success , and an Anniversary to be remembered by all present day school children
in the town we love. |
