Message: I was at the School from 1949 to 1957 - several of the names in the guest book are familiar. I am now retired and live in Bruton in Somerset. Happy to hear from any contemporaries at Wandsworth. I recently drove along Sutherland Grove and saw the new buildings - it seems curious to have seen the comprehensive being built and now taken down but it was good to see that the original grammar school buildings had been preserved.

Message: It is interesting to read the different experiences of Wandsworth School. I am one of those misfits who hated the place and for the most part played truant. However, I was stunned when I heard it had been closed. There were one or two teachers who inspired me, but it is clear I didn't inspire them very much. In my penultimate school report, the headmaster wrote that he 'could see no reason why public money should be wasted on the attempted education of this boy.' I am sure he was right about that; my diligence mark was around -20 something. I remember my mum saying 'how can you be negatively diligent?' Well, enough said about that. He also said that he had little doubt I would make my way in the world in my own way. I guess he was right about that too, as I am now a Sub Dean of a Medical School. There were some very good teachers at Wandsworth, but in my period it always seemed to me that many did not like the change to a comprehensive school from the former Grammar. I cannot think of any really good feeling or moment I ever had at Wandsworth. I don't really blame the school for that. I was trying to find myself at that time and quite frankly I was lost. I am pleased to see the contributions from those who attended Southmead Primary School. I have very fond memories of my time there. I wish I could say the same for Wandsworth, but I can't. I left in 1963/4.

Message: Just a quick message to put right the talk between Alan Bartlett and Brian Chewter (Hi Brian - I remember you!). The game of Fives that we played was definitely RUGBY Fives NOT ETON Fives! Easy to tell them apart - the Eton game has no back wall, and I am sure you remember that we played off four walls. I played with Sheldon Whitesman in School matches, and Jim Edwell and Tony Savage were our second pair. We were runners up in the Marchant Cup twice as we could never beat Hackney Downs! I did win the singles at School a couple of times. Bit fast for me these days.

Message: Like many who went to Wandsworth from the local estates(Argyle,Ackcroydon,Ashburton)I was previously at Southmead Primary School(as was yourself Jim). I attended Wandsworth from 1964-69.I really loathed the place, the stuffy teachers and prefects. There was certainly abuse(from both sides), particularly when Prof Simmons was idling along the corridors pulling pupils up by their side-burns or ears. I still remember his squeakish voice 'Don't you talk to me like that I'm authority'.Being whacked across the hand with Mr Slocombe's(science teacher) extra thick ruler, and Mr Roberts(French)launching a missile of the blackboard rubber and missing our heads by a whisker before it crashed into the wall at the back of the classroom. I was in Cromwell House, set J, Forms I Theta, 2 Iota, 3 Iota, 4C1, and 5C. It feels like having an army record. Lots of memories, mostly painful ones. I'm sure the school was used in the TV play of Hanif Quereshi's 'The Buddha of Suburbia',from the science block, over the quadrangle (where the flagpole was) and lingering by the front gates, check it out comrades.May the force be with you.
