French Beginners

Code:  111  

A new starter course for those with no or very little French, aimed at helping people understand and communicate. Some emphasis on good pronunciation and grammar. The course book Voila (+CDs) will be used and some homework will be encouraged.

French Elementary

This course aims to increase confidence and fluency for those who have done some French before (e.g. school French). A moderate amount of homework is set, usually preparing topics for conversation in class. This will be the second year of following a two-year course book, Voici!

French Intermediate 1

Code:   55  

This course requires a certain amount of confidence in spoken French. The aim is to use a text book (Facon de Parler 2), a magazine La Vie Outre Manche (by subscription) and also miscellaneous topical materials for comprehension. Some homework preparation is recommended.

French Intermediate 2

Code:  53  

A course for those with a fairly sound grounding in spoken and written French perhaps feeling it is a little rusty and wishing to  improve vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. Some conversation in class and some homework will be encouraged. A course book (with CDs) will be used.

French Intermediate 3

We use Facon de Parler 2 as the basis for grammar revision and conversation. Our aim is to increase vocabulary and understanding of the language, but the emphasis is on communication and the appreciation of life in France. A little homework is set.

French Intermediate Conversation

Informal sessions to improve your vocabulary, help you to read and explain simple contemporary texts and understand native speakers. Aim: to give you the confidence and fluency to talk about any prepared subject.

French Advanced

Newspapers, magazines and tapes are used to stimulate discussion of topical themes and current events in France. Some knowledge of the country and its culture and a degree of fluency are required, but interest and enthusiasm are more important.

French Advanced Conversation

In this group we read, translate and discuss news material, a currently popular novel, odd items such as recipes and machine handling instructions and touch lightly on history and philosophy. The aim is to improve fluencyand enjoyment for those with a fair knowledge of French.

German

This intermediate course requires a working knowledge of German. The emphasis is on the spoken word, on conversation and discussion using a variety of written material. The textbook for this year's course will be Themen 2 Aktuell (publ.Hueber).

German Conversation

We speak everyday, idiomatic German, covering anything from personal news to current affairs. We use material recorded on location or sent from our correspondents in Germany. We look at the German way of life and German perceptions of Britain. You need to have a reasonably good knowledge of spoken German.

Italian Elementary

Using Contatti 1 Text Book and Activity Book, our aim is to learn sufficient of the language to make visits to Italy and the opera more enjoyable. This is the first part of a two year course. A reasonable amount of homework is expected.

Italian Intermediate

Using Contatti 2 (2nd ed.) Text Book and Activity Book and texts from the Easy Reader series, newspapers, magazines and other sources, it is the continuation of the Elementary course. With further incursions into language structure and vocabulary, progress becomes more evident and satisfying.

Latin - An Introduction

For those who have no Latin or who have grown rusty. We use Learn Latin by Peter Jones and Disce Latinum by R.O. Marshall as a starter, take a look at Latin 'Tags', inscriptions, epitaphs and horticultural terms. As we improve we hope to look at literary passages.

Russian Intermediate

This is a group for those who, at some time, not necessarily recently!, have had a few years' study of the language. Classes start with reading and translation of Internet items from Russian newspapers or the BBC Russian Service and continue with grammar and reading of modern Russian texts.

Spanish Elementary

This will be the second year of a two year course for those who already know some Spanish. We will use Mastering Spanish by R. Clarke, starting at Chapter 11. The emphasis is on reading, listening to and speaking the language with a basic knowledge of grammar.

Spanish Intermediate

This course requires some knowledge of Spanish (R. Clarke, Mastering Spanish 2). Emphasis is on conversation, assisted by tapes, grammar work and comprehension material from El Mundo (Internet). Some homework preparation is recommended.

Spanish Advanced

Members bring in material on a variety of themes for sharing with the group; this is obtained from Spanish newspapers, magazines, books or the Internet. Note: this is not primarily a conversation group.
