MYRDDIN SAYS: My job is a very emotional one, as every day I am faced with young and old who have secondary liver cancer. I never cease to be amazed at their courage. It makes me feel incredibly privileged. There is no one in the NHS who does not feel the pressure of lack of finance - which this is why the Daily Mail venture is such a boast, because it's far too easy to focus on the problems surrounding us. I regard my whole team as heroes. Indeed, the NHS is full of heroes and one should not lose sight of this. As a miner's son from the Welsh Valleys who did not speak fluent English when I arrived at university in London, I feel proud that my team and I are pushing the boundaries as far as possible in liver surgery, which was once regarded as a no-go area. I would like to think that I have established liver surgery in England and Wales as a safe and viable option for patients who would otherwise have been left with no hope. One of my patients was Helen Rollason, the TV sports presenter. Unfortunately, when she came to me it was just too late to help her, and this was one of the biggest disappointments of my surgical career. I had to tell her there was nothing more that could be done; that there was just not enough healthy liver to leave behind. Helen's attitude was inspirational -- she simply would not throw in the towel. She has inspired a great number of my patients with her positive attitude. And a positive attitude Is so important, because now we are doing things that did not seem possible just five years ago. Surgeons are often regarded as rather cold, this is most often not the case. |
