06/05/2001 Sue writes ...

Anna asked me to attend the Sports Achievements Awards on her behalf as she was away this weekend.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Local Sports Councils and Forums.... Sports Achievement Awards 2001.

Following Anna's success as being voted Coach of the Year by Basingstoke & Deane Sports Council she was automatically put forward for the Finals covering the whole of Hampshire & the Isle of Wight.

This ceremony took place on 6th May at Petersfield School in Petersfield, As Anna was away for the weekend in Ireland (she said she was going to watch the Rugby International although this had been cancelled several weeks beforehand !  I think it was the draw of the pints of Guineas that were calling.) I was pleased to represent her in her absence, The event started with a welcome by the Chairman of Petersfield Sports Council then we were treated to a Modern Dance display from several pupils from the school.

The Chairman of Hampshire & Isle of Wight and of the Local Sports Councils & Forums then gave an introduction to the following proceedings. he explained that there were nominations for both male & female in the categories of Junior Sportsperson, Intermediate Sportsperson Senior Sportsperson Endeavour Sportsperson Coach Veteran Sportsperson and a special award for Service to Sport.

All those nominated were then called up to the platform to receive their certificates this I did for Anna. It is a framed certificate and something that I know she is delighted and proud to have received.

Then followed a short speech by Mick Jones Great Britain Hammer Thrower, he explained how he had become interested in sport and how he had worked hard to achieve his aims. As well as representing GB in the Commonwealth games and various other major competitions he represented GB in the 1988 Olympics in Sol.

He then had the pleasure of presenting the awards to the winners in each category.  Unfortunately Anna was not successful in the Coach of the Year award this being presented to Julie Andrews who is involved with Synchronised swimming.

However Basingstoke & Deane did win 3 other sections.

This finished the proceedings after we were served tea/coffee and sandwiches.

I left feeling very proud that Anna had achieved so much against such worthy opposition.

I would just like to finish this report with the words that Mick Jones said have kept him going throughout his long and distinguished career.

"I WILL I SHALL I CAN."  Something we can all bear in mind for our own personal aims and goals.

Australia shone in all departments, Amanda Newton shone in defence, but otherwise England were outclassed in all other areas.  The Aussies are tall, mobile and athletic and will remain champions for a little while yet !

The Hampshire North party from STORM, Rushmoor, Tadley and BUGS all had a nice time, thanks to Farnham Coaches for an McDonalds.jpg (3053 bytes)excellent service, and McDonalds (Target Roundabout, A40) for serving 50 meals in double quick time.

Dr Myrddin Rees has won the Hospital Doctor category of the Daily Mail "Unsung heroes of the NHS".  Dr Rees is the Chairman of the fund raising committee for the ARK Facility, the charity supported by STORM last year in our National Tournament.  True to form he promptly gave his £5000 prize to the charity.  We here at STORM send our congratulations to him and are proud that we were able to contribute in a small way to his new liver research facility to be built in Basingstoke.  (01/02/2001)
