| History |
Netball was
first played in this country at Madame Osterberg's College in Dartford,
Kent. It was brought over from America as a variation of Basketball. The
college later became Dartford P.E. College,(now part of Greenwich
University), and produced many England netball players. Hope this is of
some use.

Otherwise it is a case of trying the
bigger sports stores. Lilywhites stocks some styles.
Just need to shop around! |
| In comfort
and performance terms, my favourites were a pair of Nike cross-trainers
which cost me £79 (several years ago) and lasted about 5 months - I felt
as though they gave me a couple of extra inches of elevation! But I
couldn't keep paying out that sort of money. I now actually play in a
pair of Wilson 505 tennis shoes, not most people's obvious choice, which
cost £55 and which have lasted over a year and are still going strong.
They look a bit clunky but they're comfortable and don't catch, and I'd
certainly recommend them. |
| If
you're anywhere near London, Cardiff or Edinburgh pay a visit to "Run and Become"
they'll fit you to the right pair of trainers for your feet that suit your
sport. I wear 'New Balance' in preference to
Nike Air because they're right for me and that's the key
issue, not the particular maker. |
| IT MAY
NOT SOUND VERY TRENDY BUT A GOOD PAIR OF TRAINERS TO PLAY NETBALL IN IS MITRE AND GILBERT.
BUT I TOTALLY RECOMMEND REEBOK AEROBIC
TRAINERS AS THEY ARE THE BEST 4 ANY SPORT AS SOME ONE I KNOW
LOOKED IT UP A FEW YEARS A GO AND THEY WERE THE BEST. |
| SAUCONY
are by far the best for court netball the sole last for ages unlike all the
designer names . they can be purchase at tournaments and things like
that, if you go to Brean sands or any
tournament then Maybush sports outside netball stall sells them.
They are around £40.00 only & well worth it. |
I used to suffer terribly with black toe nails etc, and then I
discovered Alexandra Sports in Gladys Ave, Portsmouth.
They have been a professional sports shop for as long as I
can remember and all the staff are taught how to measure
and fit trainers properly. You are even allowed to run up
and down outside when you try the trainers on - fantastic!!
I have now been 'fitted' with a superb pair of NEW BALANCE
trainers, they are brilliant - if you live locally pop in and see them
(I'm not on commission honest)... As previously mentioned -
think of comfort not fashion ! |
| Socks |
Good sports
shops sell Thorlo socks (not the ones in the High Street like JJB or First
Sport). Alternatively try camping or hiking shops. Be careful when buying
Thorlo socks though. You can get ones that are specific for hiking,
tennis, basketball etc. They have padding in all the right places for
these sports. Unfortunately Netball is not on the list so my advice would
be to go for the Tennis or the Basketball ones. |
