Charity

  • Can you help .. Flora Light Challenge for Women
I work for an overseas development charity called Find Your Feet (FYF). FYF is dedicated to creating lasting solutions to poverty in the developing world. An important element of our work is helping young mothers in India and Africa to set up small businesses so that they can earn enough money to provide their children with food, healthcare, and an education.

We are currently looking for women to join our team in this year's Flora Light Challenge for Women - a 5km run (or walk) for women of all ages that is taking place in Hyde Park on Sunday 5th September. I was wondering if you would be able to help us by forwarding the following details on to members of the Storm Netball Club or by displaying a poster on your notice boardAny help that you can offer us in promoting this event would be greatly appreciated.

The Flora Light Challenge for Women is a 5k fun run (or walk!) for women of all ages and will take place in Hyde Park, London on Sunday 5th September 2004. Last year, a record number of 25,000 women of all ages and ability took part in the 5k fun run and the atmosphere generated was truly electric.

Find Your Feet, an overseas development charity dedicated to creating lasting solutions to poverty in India and Africa, is looking for people to join their team in this year's event. To find out more about running for Find Your Feet, please call Gila on 020 7326 4601 or email gila@fyf.org.uk. To find out more about Find Your Feet's work, please visit: www.fyf.org.uk.

  • THE CELEBRITY NETBALL SEVENS
    When: 3rd October 2004
Cup Promotions would like to invite you to take part in its 8th annual Celebrity Netball Sevens tournament which is taking place at Crystal Palace National Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday 3rd October 2004. Staged every year in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the event has had over 150 celebrities from the world of show biz, TV, music, entertainment and sport involved since its inception. Thousands of pounds have been raised for breast cancer charities with incalculable awareness achieved and this year the event will be supporting the Charities Trust.

This year we are delighted to announce that we will be hosting the Junior Sevens (under 14) and the Mini Sevens (under 12) competitions which, supported by England Netball will showcase the best that junior netball has to offer. The competitions will comprise of a tournament held on Saturday 2nd October 2004 held either on the outdoor courts at Crystal Palace or at another venue in close proximity (depending on number of entries). Here the group stages of the Junior Sevens and Mini Sevens will take place to produce semi finalists. On Sunday 3rd October 2004 at the Celebrity Netball Sevens the semi finals and finals of both competitions will take place in front of the packed crowd at the Crystal Palace Indoor Arena to produce the Junior Sevens and Mini Sevens Champions 2004. However for those who don’t make it to the semi finals the fun doesn’t just stop on the Saturday as all players receive free tickets to the Celebrity Netball Sevens on Sunday 3rd October to not only watch the Celebrities in action but to take part in the Junior Sevens and Mini Sevens Parades where all teams receive certificates from celebrities. Check out the photo below from 2003 where all teams were presented with their certificates by D-Side and the lucky Manor team even had their photo taken with the boys and their trophy!!!

As you can imagine this is a fantastic opportunity for your girls with the chance to not only play against the best of their age group and make friends, but to compete alongside celebrities. With the support of England Netball we hope to establish the Celebrity Netball Sevens as the premier junior netball event in the country.

The Celebrity Netball Sevens 2003 saw its biggest crowd and participation numbers ever! The stars were out in force to provide entertainment for the hoards of spectators who descended upon Crystal Palace National Indoor Sports Centre for the 7th Celebrity Netball Sevens. Netball fans were treated to some real quality netball with the Junior and Mini Sevens Finals held alongside the celebrity matches for the first time ever.

Catalina Guirado’s Babes in Black were the first to arrive in their team ‘Babe Bus’ and headed straight to the changing rooms where they began to discuss team tactics. This team, the bookies favourites because of their distinct height advantage, deployed star shooter Catalina in their first match and swiftly dispatched the Blue Birds who included Meera Syal at goal shooter who lacked the service that her accuracy of shooting deserved. CBBC’s Kirsten O’Brien made some vital interceptions which sparked a Blue Birds comeback in the second half of the game, but this last push wasn’t enough to win the match, with The Babes in Black coming out as 9-5 winners.

This first match set the tone for the rest of the day with the Babes in Black beating all teams that stood in their path to the Celebrity Netball Sevens Final. The Pure Whites team consisting of Jordan, the Fame Academy girls and the Fast Food Rockers never really got it together and even with the invention of the self titled ‘Power Lob’ by Jordan (a two armed vertical throw) they failed to muster a win all day.

This year is set to be even bigger and better with team supporters battling it out to win the Superfans Trophy! Last year all team supporters got involved, with balloons, banners, hooters, pom poms and posters, but this year with a trophy up for grabs the atmosphere in the stands may be as electric as the atmosphere on the court!!

Teams in the Junior Sevens and Mini Sevens must be next seasons under 14’s and under 12’s i.e. under 12/14 on September 1st 2004, and squads can consist of up to 12 players. Entry to the competition will cost £50 per team which will include:

    Entry to the Junior/Mini Sevens
Free tickets to all players and the team coach for the Celebrity Netball Sevens
    Certificates to all players
Medals to winners and runners up
    Trophy for each winning team
Entry for spectators into the Superfans competition

Last year clubs including Oldham, Manor, Turnford, Parkside, Oaksway and Hertford Hornets all took part, with many taking the opportunity to make a weekend of it and see the sights of London, for example last year the Oldham girls went to see David Blaine in his Glass Box!

    GO ON… BE A PLAYER!!!!

Teams will need to provide one qualified umpire per team.

Tickets for the Celebrity Netball Sevens are on sale now!!! at www.seetickets.com or on 08712200260.
