To resolve the problem...

  1. Make sure that a valid Internet connection has been established (able to browse)
  2. Check that no large messages are blocking the sending and/or receiving process
  3. Recreate the mail account through Tools > Accounts
  4. Compact the Database
  5. Dump normal connection preferences and refresh
