Frequently
asked Questions |
| Q:
My question is can you
mount 5.5" rims to the front of a VW based kit car and not have
problems? What does everyone who races their 550 Spyder wear on
the front? I'm looking at Empi style wheels, and really need the extra width front rims. Mark Padgett Beck 550 |
| A:
On 5.5"
rims...I use them on front with 185/65 yoko AVSi...to avoid rubbing,
have the centers cut, moved to stock offset & rewelded.

| Q:
The problem I have at the moment
is the battery location. I do not wish it to intrude into the luggage
area too much but do not have access to a welder. Any suggestions? GP Spyder |
| A:
I relocated my battery tray by
finding a preferred spot in the body, cutting an appropriate sized hole,
then fibreglassing a box type enclosure into it.
You could also use sheet aluminum and rivets with drilled holes for a competition look on the battery box. Dave Kraft |
| Q:
Has anyone else suffered with reduced
steering turn due to wheels rubbing the body inner tub? Is this something we have to live with or is it due to incorrect body alignment? |
| Q:
I have noticed on the few cars (RSK
Spyders) that I have seen at shows, that 155/15 seems to be the common
size for front tyres due to clearance problems (and most cars have at
least one place that the tyres rub, usually on back of headlight shell).
Does anyone use 145/15's? and if so how does the handling compare to 155's? Do you have difficulty getting hold of tyres? |

Q:
Has
anyone come across a supplier of period sponsor decals?
|
| Q:
Do you have cooling problems? If you did how did you resolve it? Where have you located your oil cooler? |
| A:
Try a sump extension - this provides
a greater volume of oil and helps a bit to reduce overall temperature.
It also stops oil surge when cornering briskly! You will also need to add an external oil cooler. Mine is situated under the front of the car with pipes running inside the sill. Now runs at 85C for a 150BHP type 1 engine. DO NOT remove the internal oil cooler as some people do. Roger England. |
| Q:
What is the weather protection like,
good, average or poor?
Do you use the car all year or only when the weather is good? How does it handle on wet roads? |
| A: See letters page for answer. |
| Q:
Has anyone in Canada (BC) built one of these ? I have questions about import duty and licensing for street use - Alan Froome, Vancouver |
