Build It Down Under

This page is dedicated to helping you build your car.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, sol here are a few thousand words to start with. These pictures are to help you with whatever you are concerned with.

If you have any specific questions about your build then ask away, and I will try and find something or someone to help.

If you have taken pictures of your build, then please send them in as I'm sure they will help someone.

These are not my images or car, so I may not be able to answer specific questions about them, but I will try!

If you recognize these pictures as your own then please let me know and I will label them approprately.

The first few images are of the extra legroom conversion for the VW chassis.

The whole floorpan has been replaced including the outer perimiter (where the body mounts to) with a flat steel floorpan and rectangular box section perimeter rail. (This gives more legroom and better space for seats)

The pedal assembly has been raised from the floor and the pedals reversed in order to give more leg room and create a pendulum operation.
By doing this you have to create a new front bulkhead to mount the assembly onto and this neccesitates removing part of the original glassfibre bulkhead. Therefore some glassing and fabrication will be necessary.

The image on the right shows how an IRS chassis can be used with the long torsion bar covers. Note the slot cut into body to house the covers.

Image on right shows how the steering column is aligned with the steering box.

This shot also shows the mounting position for the Beetle fuel tank in the nose.

This shot gives a good idea of how much extra space is created by the new floor.

The original floor would be approx' 1inch below the body mounting face.

This image shows that an Alfa Romeo Alfasud boxer engine can be installed into a Spyder kit.

My advice; if you want to use an Alfasud engine, would be to build the car first using the VW engine.
Then when you have got it through the SVA and sorted all other teething problems, convert to Alfa power.

For details on converting to Alfa and/or Subaru power see this excellent site:

Here the radiator is mounted almost horizontally in front of torsion bars.

Notice also this car has a return lip in the front boot. should make bonnet fitting easier.

The car is a South African made RSK Spyder, made under licence from GP, but sadly no longer available.
The fuel tank in the S' African cars was in the rear luggage area against the rear bulkhead, directly behind the cabin. You can just see part of it in the picture above, next to the header tank.
