Build It Down Under

New Zealand modifications for registration.

These are some that are required for a very strict compliance in NZ. I believe these modifications will also comply in Australia.
The 1962 linkpin floopan was stripped. Sway away torsion bar height adjusters were welded in to the front torsion bars.
The floorpan was shortened and new lowered pans welded in.
After reassembly with mostly new parts, the floopan was modified to meet New Zealand compliance.
This work was carried out by Platinum Speedsters in Auckland (356 and 550 replicas exported around the world).
Very nice work as you will see from the photos and the end result is a very strong safe car.

Modifications:

a. Frame triangulating front of the floorpan to stiffen it, also hold pedals and collapsible steering column (mounted in two locations). New front bulkhead glassed around steel frame.

b. Side impact beams through sills with steel mounting brackets for door hinges and lock mechanism.

c. Side impact beams though doors with all catches and hinges mounted steel to steel. Glassed in.

d. New front cross member holding battery and locating front of car with a more secure location and in-built bumper.

e. Fuel tank located to the rear.

f. Roll bar more securely located to rear subframe with similar sized pipe to roll bar.

g. New door hinges - 5mm hardened bolt. Hinges recessed. (Legal requirement 4mm, hinges supplied 3mm).

If the front black F/G glassed to the front sub frame looks familiar, it is the centre of the rear parcel shelf that was cut out to fit the fuel tank!
