With a Cambridge Guitar Holiday you receive two hours of individual tuition each weekday morning, Monday to Friday, at the guitar studio in Cambridge. You can bring your own guitar or hire a guitar for your use during the holiday.
You learn to play using a classical nylon string guitar or an acoustic steel string guitar. For beginners, the nylon strings are more comfortable for your fingers when you first start playing!

For the Beginners Holidays, you learn how to sit comfortably holding the guitar, and how to tune the instrument using an electronic tuner and relative tuning using your ear. You start playing single line tunes using the fingerpicking techniques taught.
A music book is supplied and you are taught to read the standard music notation, with guitar music being written in the treble clef.
You learn how to strum the guitar and play some popular chords. You become familiar with the location of the notes on the guitar fingerboard while exploring how to produce the wide range of tones possible from the guitar.

On the Improvers Holidays you study pieces of music in more depth, considering style, effective interpretation, tone, dynamic contrasts and the detail in both the left and right-hand fingerings. You learn ways to practise special techniques such as playing apoyando and tirando, ligados, half-barres and full barres, tremolos, and harmonics.
Sight reading, music theory, aural training, and scales and arpeggios are covered as required. You are given guidance on how to practise, memorise, and prepare pieces for performances. The guitar repertoire is large and varied, so music can be chosen to suit your interests. |
