On Tuesdays at GUGS we focus on tabletop RPG gaming. We begin gaming at 5:30pm in the Lacuna area of the Queen Margaret Union Food Factory. At the bottom of this page are the regular games that ran last term. New games are about to start up and information will be available shortly. Each week there are also pick-up games and one-offs to be had, and some non-RPG gaming often as well (boardgames, CCGs, miniatures, etc...). If you would like to start up a regular game of your own please contact the GUGS RPG convener Lambert.
But what is roleplaying? To all intents and purposes, this is the most common question roleplayers get asked by non-roleplayers. What is it all about? The problem is, it's not easy to explain the concept of roleplaying to someone who has never tried it. To an outsider a group of people roleplaying will just look like some people sitting round a table, having a laugh, rolling dice and writing things down on bits of paper in front of them. In a roleplaying game you take on the role of a character in a story, written by one of the players, called the Games Master (GM). You decide what your character says and does, but only the GM knows what will happen next. The outcome of actions are decided by rolling dice, for example if you would like your character to jump from a window the GM might decide the chances of landing safely are 2 in 6. There are no "winners" in a roleplaying game. The aim of the game is to solve the mystery, rescue the hostages, save the world, etc by cooperating with the other players as characters would in a book or film. The role of the GM is to make the story as exciting and interesting as possible so fun is had by everyone involved. You don't need to have done anything like this before. It's the GMs job to know the rules and explain as the game progresses. All you need to bring is yourself, and maybe a pencil.
So what is wargaming? Entirely different from roleplaying, this is a game where two or more players use armies of painted miniatures and a complex set of rules to fight battles over a tabletop filled with scenery of hills, forests, buildings etc. There is no GM in a wargame. There are many different wargames out there, from Fantasy armies, like Lord of the Rings, to WW2 battles, to science fiction battles. There are people who play all types of wargames at GUGS, so if you play any particular game you are very likely to find someone already plays it, and if not we are always keen to try new games. If you have never done any wargaming and would like to give it a try you are very welcome to come along. People are always eager to introduce new players to their game. Again, all you need is yourself, and maybe a pencil, although it's probably a good idea to arrange the game beforehand so someone can bring an army for you to borrow.
What about card games? The card games played at GUGS are mostly collectible card games such as Magic, Shadowfist, VS (versus system) and WWE Raw Deal. In a collectible card game you assemble a deck from a large number of possible cards. Each card represents a person, an action, equipment, or event, etc, depending on the game. Since decks can be constructed in a variety of ways, you never quite know what to expect, and every game is different. All of the above games are really best explained by taking part. Even if you don't know whether this is something you might enjoy just come along and give it a try. If it's not your thing at least you'll know. If it is… welcome to GUGS and many hours of fun!
