WRITING THE LANDSCAPE I have run this workshop at several venues and in different formats: as a residential weekend for the University of Cambridge and as a dayschool for the Cheltenham Literature Festival (as Writers Out and About) as well as privately here in Cambridge. The course includes a range of exercises designed to help writers to see, hear and generally experience their environment more acutely and to incorporate this into their writing, creating vivid and believable settings for their stories Part of the course involves going out and about to gather material and, depending upon where the course is located, we may find ourselves exploring a park or a village, a cemetery or the city streets... CHARACTER WORKSHOP This speaks for itself, really. Once we've created the setting for our story or novel, we need to populate it with convincing characters. Where possible this course also involves participants getting out and about to gather material and observe BITE THE BULLET - START WRITING THAT NOVEL If you're anything like me, when it comes to settling down and starting to write, prevarication can become an art form - suddenly cleaning the cats' litter tray seems the most stimulating and important activity of the day - nothing must delay. So, in a way you could say I devised this course for myself. If you've been meaning to get down and write that novel any day now, this course is for you. It will give you ideas and techniques for getting started as well as allowing you the opportunity to compare notes with others in a similar situation. It is important to realise we are not alone...
